The Marlins and Major League Baseball are celebrating the 16th annual Jackie Robinson Day today, honoring the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson on the anniversary of his Major League debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Below is a list of activities taking place on the field prior to tonight's game:
· Jackie Robinson’s Nine Values Panel: The Miami Marlins will host a Jackie Robinson Day panel discussion about Jackie's values for 42 youth members from each of the following organizations, 5000 Role Models and Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. Marlins' CEO Derek Jeter will lead the discussion, which includes Marlins' players Lewis Brinsonand Curtis Granderson, Marlins' President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill, Marlins' alumnus Charles Johnson, and University of Miami student and Jackie Robinson Foundation scholar Miles Pendleton, who is also a contributing member of UM's Leadership Academy and a volunteer with InspireU.
· Jackie Robinson Employee of the Year Award – In 2014, the Miami Marlins organization launched the Jackie Robinson Employee of the Year award to honor the life and legacy of the great Jackie Robinson. Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill will present the 2019 Jackie Robinson Employee of the Year Award to Marlins Director of Ballpark Operations Antonio Torres-Roman.
· The Miami Marlins Foundation, through The Miami Marlins Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program, will make a $5,000 contribution to the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Fund.
· Curtis Granderson’s GrandKids Foundation – In honor of Jackie Robinson Day, Marlins outfielder Curtis Granderson’s GrandKids Foundation will host 42 kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade at the game. The group will watch batting practice from the field, meet with players, and participate in a pregame experience.
