Are You Ready for Dorian?
Preparation can make a big difference when it comes to safety and security.
Hurricane Dorian is moving north. Residents in its projected path should monitor weather reports and heed instructions from local officials. These tips can also help protect you and your property:
- Review your home insurance. Make sure you have the right amount of coverage. Know your deductibles and what your policy covers.
- Prepare a home inventory. Thoroughly document all your belongings before the hurricane. It will help the claims process go smoothly. Create a digital, visual or hand-written home inventory list.
- Protect your property. Stock up on plywood and material you may need to board up. Move garbage cans and other large objects inside the house or garage.
- Protect your vehicles. If you are leaving behind a vehicle, place it in a garage or leave it on high ground.
- Tie up boats. Secure or if possible, place inside a building.
- Have an evacuation plan. Before the hurricane, decide what you will do. Locate nearby evacuation shelters.
- Put together an emergency kit. Include basics such as water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, blankets, batteries and important documents. Store your kit in a plastic container with a lid.
